Connect to SharePoint on-premises (NTLM)
Use your Windows logon or a DOMAIN\user account to connect to SharePoint 2010–2019 or Subscription Edition.
Choose the sign-in type
| Option | When to use it |
|---|---|
| Windows – current user (NTLM/Kerberos) | Your Windows account has access to the farm (domain-joined PC) |
| Windows – user name & password (NTLM) | You need another account, for example a migration service account, written as DOMAIN\user |
| Microsoft 365 / browser sign-in | The farm uses ADFS or forms sign-in |
Connect
- Open Connections, enter the site address (for example
https://sharepoint.contoso.local/sites/projects) and choose the sign-in type. - For user name & password, enter
DOMAIN\userand the password.
On-premises connections can be the source or the destination.
The password is encrypted with Windows (DPAPI), so only your Windows profile can read it.
If the connection fails
- 401 / sign-in failed: check
DOMAIN\userand the password. Try opening the site in a browser on the same PC. - Cannot reach the server: check VPN or network access, and that the address uses the right protocol (http or https).
