Error: "Access denied (401) for … – the app can't read this item"
SharePoint refused the app one file, folder or page of items while the rest of the site works – often paths like .svn, .git or wwhelp. Update the app and run again.
What it means
The site accepts the app (other files copy), but SharePoint refused this one request. The message shows the address it refused:
| The address contains | What was refused | Fixed in |
|---|---|---|
…/ListItemAllFields?$select=Id | Looking up a new file or folder by its path. Web filters in front of SharePoint refuse some paths, for example containing .svn, .git or certain help folders. | 1.0.16 (by unique ID) and 1.0.18 (by name, for files with no unique ID) |
…/items?$skiptoken=… | A whole page of 2,000 items while reading the library. One item in it can't be shown to the app with all its columns. | 1.0.19 – that page is read item by item |
…AddUsingPath(decodedurl='… with a very long name | A file or folder name over 200 characters. | handled in current versions |
How to fix it
- Update the app (click Update in the bar at the top of the window, or install the latest version from My licenses). Your connections, tasks and license stay.
- Open Tasks, select the task and click Run again with Copy if newer (incremental).
On 1.0.19 and later, an item SharePoint won't show at all is reported on its own as SharePoint won't show this item to the app, so it can't be copied, and an item copied without its column values gets the warning Column values: SharePoint refused them to the app. Everything else copies.
Still refused after updating? Send us the report line and the app version in a support ticket.
