O365 Migration: import from Google Drive

Copy Google Drive folders and files – My Drive, Shared with me and shared drives – into SharePoint and OneDrive. Set up a service account or sign in with Google.

O365 Migration reads Google Drive (read-only) and copies into any SharePoint or OneDrive library or folder you can connect to. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drawings are converted; everything else is copied as it is.

1. Connect to Google

Open Google Drive in the left menu → Add Google account. Choose one of the two ways:

Reads the Drive of any user in your Workspace. Nobody has to sign in. A Workspace administrator sets it up once:

  1. Google Cloud console → create or pick a project → APIs & Services → Library → enable Google Drive API.
  2. IAM & Admin → Service accounts → Create service account (no roles needed) → open it → Keys → Add key → Create new key → JSON. Keep the file safe.
  3. Google Admin console → Security → Access and data control → API controls → Manage domain-wide delegation → Add new:
  • Client ID: the client_id from the key file (the app also shows it on the account card)
  • OAuth scope: https://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.readonly
  1. In O365 Migration choose the key file and enter a Workspace user to test with (an administrator works). Delegation can take a few minutes to start working.

Sign in with Google (one account, Workspace or personal Gmail)

  1. In Google Cloud console enable Google Drive API.
  2. Google Auth Platform → Audience: Internal for your Workspace, or External and add the accounts that will sign in as test users.
  3. Clients → Create client → Desktop app → download the JSON.
  4. In O365 Migration choose that file and click Sign in with Google. Your web browser opens Google's sign-in page; when it says you are signed in, go back to the app.

The key file and the sign-in are encrypted with Windows for your user account and are only sent to Google.

2. Copy

  1. Copy → Import external content → Import from Google Drive (or Copy from Google Drive on the Google Drive page).
  2. Choose the destination connection and library (and open a folder in it if you like).
  3. Pick the Google account. For a service account, type the user whose Drive you want and click Open.
  4. Double-click My Drive, Shared with me or a shared drive, select folders and files, and click Import & copy.

What happens to each item

In Google DriveIn SharePoint / OneDrive
Folders and ordinary files (PDF, Office, images, video…)Copied as they are, with created and modified dates; large files are streamed
Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, DrawingsConverted to PDF (default), or to Word / Excel / PowerPoint (Drawings → PNG), or skipped – choose next to Options
Google Forms, Sites, MapsSkipped with a reason in the report (Google can't export them)
ShortcutsSkipped – copy the original item instead
Names with characters SharePoint doesn't allow, such as : ? * " < > / \Those characters become _; the report says "Renamed from …"
Two items with the same name in one folderThe second becomes name (2).ext
  • Owner and last editor become Created by / Modified by when the person exists in the destination. Different e-mail domains? Add them under Mappings (source: the Google e-mail address). Anyone unresolved gets the signed-in account and one warning.
  • Google can only convert files up to 10 MB. Bigger Docs/Sheets show an error in the report – download them from Google Drive yourself.
  • Files whose owner turned off downloading are reported as errors.
  • Sharing settings and comments are not copied, and nobody is notified.

Run it again (incremental)

Copy if newer is the default: running the same import again copies only new files and files changed in Google since the last run. In Tasks, select the task and click Edit and run again to untick items or switch PDF / Office.
